WHO ARE THE STUDENTS IN THE BANDS?

While music majors comprise the majority of the concert ensembles, the Marching Band is made up of students from throughout the campus. 85% of the 200 members who comprised the 2003 "Golden Buffalo" Marching Band were majoring in degree programs outside of music. In fact, the majority of students are from the College of Engineering and Applied Science, the College of Business and Administration, and the College of Arts and Sciences. CU student musicians in the marching band enjoy band as a break from their normal academic pursuits, but still manage to achieve GPAs that are consistently above the average on campus. Many of these students also hold leadership positions in other campus student organizations.

The Men's and Women's Basketball Bands, in addition to the bands that perform at spirit events, are all students from the Marching Band. It is therefore important to note that the same students are being asked to perform in all events where bands perform in support of intercollegiate athletics or any event where a "Spirit" or Pep band is requested. The average time each student spends in required band activities or performances is in excess of 300 hours in the regular season of fall semester for regular marching band members, while Graduate Assistants and those in Leadership positions spend over 360 hours.

This figure includes only rehearsals and athletic related performances and does not include post-season athletic performances, band recruiting performances, travel time, and administrative or planning time,

AVERAGE HOURS:

Graduate Assistants: 547 hours
Section and Squad Leaders: 535 hours
Band Members: 496 hours

TOTAL AVERAGE:
510 hours per member at 200 members

TOTAL HOURS:
102,000

The students who make up the Athletic Bands at Colorado are an extremely diverse and dedicated section of the student population who choose to spend their valuable time entertaining their fellow students, faculty and staff, and the general public by creating spirit and performing live music to the benefit of the entire University. They serve the University at parents organization events, basketball games, volley ball games, at pep rallies and at events hosted by Alumni, Presidents, and Chancellors.
