Many of his former conducting students now hold major positions throughout North America in both wind and orchestral conducting. Since his arrival the University of Colorado Wind Symphony has distinguished itself with performances at major conferences and conventions. Professor McMurray has also been the host of the College Band Directors National Association Conducting Symposium providing professional development for hundreds of college wind conductors. Prior to his arrival at Colorado he held faculty positions at the University of Michigan, Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville, the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and the Interlochen Arts Academy. Among his many honors and awards is the Bohumil Makovsky Award for Outstanding College Band Directors from the National Band Fraternity, Kappa Kappa Psi.
